Normandy, Invasion of

Normandy, Invasion of (France) On 6 June 1944 (D-D ay), in an operation directly commanded by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, 23,000 paratroopers (one British and two US divisions) dropped behind German lines, while 702 warships (including 6 battleships, 23 cruisers, and 68 destroyers) and 4,781 supporting vessels (including 4,100 landing craft) landed 57,500 Americans and 75,000 British and Canadians to five beachheads defended by 30,000 German troops, 890 aircraft, and 130 tanks. The landing was supported by 12,000 Allied aircraft. Troops began landing at 0630 and met light resistance, except for the First US Division on Omaha Beach. Allied losses in the first 24 hours were 1,465 killed, 3,184 wounded, 1,928 missing, and 28 captured, of which half were US casualties. During the first 48 hours, the Allies landed 176,000 men and 1,500 tanks. By 1 July, almost 1,000,000 men, 500,000 tons of supplies, and 177,000 vehicles were put ashore; during that period, the Allies lost 122,000 men, versus German casualties of 156,000 (including 41,000 prisoners). Deaths among French civilians in Normandy totaled about 15,000.
