Coronado, Francisco Vasquez De (b. Salamanca, Spain, 1510; d. Mexico City, November 1554) On 23 February 1540, Coronado left Mexico City with 300 Spaniards and 800 Indians to search for gold. After crossing into Ariz., he marched east to the Arkansas River in Kans., then passed through the Tex. panhandle to N.Mex. He returned to Mexico City in October 1542. Scouting parties sent out by Coronado reached the Grand Canyon and probably Calif., and his expedition was the first major exploration of the southwest.
