Historical SummaryIt is noticeable that these exactions of service and behavior are applied mainly to men who remove women to their own groups or settle in the groups of their brides. But in certain localities there are definite patterns of etiquette through which the bride is incorporated. In some Caucasian tribes she must remain silent for a period of time:
[Among the Abchasses] for several months she speaks to no one. Then she begins to speak to the younger ones of the household and village, and also with older persons, and last of all with mother-in-law and father-in-law.2 [In Circassia] the bride for a year from the day of her marriage, is not allowed to speak a word louder than a whisper, not even with her own parents, when another feast is celebrated, which gives her the full use of her tongue.3
