Savo Island, Battle of On 8–9 August 1942, en route to attack troop transports off Guadalcanal, Vice Admiral Guichi Mikawa’s 7 cruisers and 1 destroyer defeated Rear Admiral Richmond Turner’s 6 cruisers and 4 destroyers, but withdrew without destroying USMC invasion transports. US losses: 3 US cruisers, 1 Australian destroyer, 1,000 casualties. Japanese losses: minimal.
