Constantinople:Center of an Empire
In 330, the Roman Emperor Constantine shifted the empire's capital city from Rome to Byzantium. In honor of the emperor, the city was renamed after him. The city quickly grew to be the largest and wealthiest in Europe as well as the center of Christianity in the West. The following documents discuss the founding of Constantinople.
