George Eliot
George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (November 22, 1819-December 22, 1880), English journalist and author, who was one of the greatest writers of the Victorian era. Known for her realistic and insightful fiction about middle-class life in the English countryside, she published using a male name so that her writing would be taken seriously. The author of seven novels, she is most noted today for her last work, Middlemarch (1871-1872), widely considered one of the greatest novels of English literature.
